Each year, Amazon wraps up info for its annual Best of Prime list just in time for the holiday season. The 2019 numbers and highlights may have you questioning whether Alexa or Santa is the real winner this year.
Top highlights include: Prime member favorites, such as the Echo Dot, Fire TV Stick with Alexa Voice Remote, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, and the novel The Handmaid’s Tale, plus…avocados. The press release also called out expanded delivery and notably faster delivery.
Amazon claims Prime members worldwide saved more than one billion dollars throughout Prime Day 2019.
“Best of Prime celebrates what members loved most this year and how Prime made their lives a little simpler, more convenient, and more fun,” said Jamil Ghani, Vice President, Amazon Prime.
Faster delivery on more products
One area of Amazon’s focus this year was faster delivery. According to Amazon, 2019 resulted in 3x more items ordered from Amazon being delivered in one day or faster. Amazon’s fastest delivery was 13 minutes. It was an Amazon grocery delivery for a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc from Whole Foods Market. Customers are thirsty for speed, and the number of Prime products keeps growing, with Prime Free One-Day Delivery currently on more than 10 million products.
Grocery delivery expands
In Q4 this year, Amazon announced Prime would now include free grocery delivery. The press release of Prime 2019 highlights also focuses on this aspect of the business. With free and fast grocery delivery from Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods Market in over 2,000 cities and towns, Prime members had hundreds of millions of grocery items delivered with Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods Market. According to Amazon, turkeys, roses, and ice cream were the three best-selling Whole Foods Market deals this past year for Prime members.
Entertainment brought to you by Prime
Each year, we continue to see an expanded selection of offerings from Prime Video, Prime Music, Prime Reading and Twitch Prime. Amazon notes some of the most popular Amazon Original series in the U.S. included The Boys, Carnival Row, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Good Omens and Hanna. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is the most awarded Amazon Original series ever with a total of 16 Emmys, 3 Golden Globes, 5 Critics’ Choice and 3 SAG Awards.
Listeners’ favorite albums included Lover by Taylor Swift, WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? by Billie Eilish, and GIRL by Maren Morris. But the most requested song on Alexa was “Old Town Road (Remix)” by Lil Nas X featuring Billy Ray Cyrus.
When it comes to reading, the top five most read titles in the U.S. were The Bad Seed, A Curve in the Road, The Handmaid’s Tale, A Case of Need: A Novel and Beneath a Scarlet Sky: A Novel.
It’s always fascinating to see what customers bought from Amazon. Amazon noted that customers sent millions of gifts with Prime delivery. The top gifted items, outside of Amazon devices, included: Becoming by Michelle Obama, the Instant Pot DUO60, First Builders Big Building Bag and children’s book, The Wonky Donkey. The most gift-giving U.S. states per capita were Delaware, Washington, and Virginia. Speaking of the Instant Pot, Amazon said it has “been among the top sellers” for three years running now.
Even so, the Pot couldn’t beat out Amazon devices. Heavily advertised on Prime Day and throughout the year, these items were very popular in 2019. Some of the most purchased items by Prime members include Echo Dot, Fire TV Stick 4K with Alexa Voice Remote, Fire TV Stick with Alexa Voice Remote, and AncestryDNA: Genetic Ethnicity Test. Though, Amazon gives no hard sales data or numbers to rank these items.
